Chicago Mayor Daley Blasted For Airport Destruction

by Mr. Flight on August 20th, 2005

Over at Illinois Conservative Politics there is an opinion piece suggesting to Mayor Daley that he should leave at the end of his term. They cite three major reasons, one of which being the destruction of Meigs Field.

Similarly, hijacking Meigs Field in the dead of night, aggravated by blinding the cameras that should have recorded the airport’s seizure, reveals the mayor places his personal comforts above the economic welfare of the city.

Mayor Daley says he closed the airport for security reasons and the FAA has been investigating the misuse of government funds regarding the destruction of the airport. The article also suggests that Mayor Daley might have had additional personal gain from the destruction of Meigs Field.

The way I understand it, the Mayor had just moved from Bridgeport to a development near the airport. Once he got there, the noise of airplanes bothered him. So, by tearing up the runways, he stopped the noise and, no doubt, enhanced the value of the townhomes.
