Ultralight Plane Follows Monarch Butterfly Migratory Route

by Mr. Flight on September 3rd, 2005

An ultralight plane will follow the monarch butterfly migratory route from Canada to their sanctuaries in Mexico. The plane, called Papalotzin (from the nahuatl language: papalotl meaning butterfly and tzin meaning tiny), and pilot, Francisco “Vico” Gutierrez, began the trip in Montreal on August 22 and won’t wrap up until early November in Mexico.

During the trip, Vico and his team will film a documentary about the life, flight, and challenges of the monarch butterfly. In the following weeks they will fly through Ontario, across the states of New York, Maryland, Tennessee, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas in the U.S.A., and finally finish the route in the butterfly sanctuaries of Michoacan, Mexico.
