Perpetual Solar Powered Flight

by Mr. Flight on September 15th, 2005

A team of people who conducted the first flight around the world without stopping is starting a new project. The journey will be quite similar with one exception… it will be conducted entirely under solar power.

bertrand Piccard, Andre Borschberg, and Brian Jones are leading the team which hopes to begin construction of the prototype craft next year with the following goal.

“assemble the best brains available to develop the necessary technologies to design and build an aircraft capable of staying airborne without any external help, save from the sun.”

NASA currently has a solar powered aircraft, however it doesn’t generate enough power to support itself for extended periods of time. The NASA aircraft uses solar power and hydrogen fuel cells.
