NTSB to Investigate JetBlue Emergency Landing

by Mr. Flight on September 22nd, 2005

Just a quick update to our story yesterday about JetBlue Flight 292, the NTSB announced today that they will be investigating the incident.

NTSB investigators from the Board’s regional office in Gardena, California, were on scene last evening and are continuing the investigation today.  The Investigator-in-charge (IIC) is Howard Plagens. Investigators will be examining the airplane, interviewing the flight crew and other airline personnel, and reviewing maintenance and service records. The cockpit voice recorder and digital flight data recorder have been removed from the airplane and secured by the IIC.

We are also following up on reports that passengers were moved towards seats in the back of the plane prior to arrival. Some say this happened… some say it didn’t.

While it is true that this would have put less weight on the nose wheel during rollout, as a pilot I’m not sure if I would want to do that. Flying is all about repetition and the plane would perhaps “feel” different on approach. While prepping for an emergency landing I want as many things familiar as possible… especially the plane’s handling characteristics. What decision would you make? Let us know in the comments below!
