Live ATC Recording of JetBlue Flight 292 Emergency Landing

by Mr. Flight on September 23rd, 2005

An amazing live ATC recording has surfaced in which you can hear much of the conversation between the JetBlue pilot and the maintenance crew trying to diagnose the problem. There is an important lesson to be learned here. The maintenance crew was convinced that the landing gear was straight… which as we know didn’t turn out to be the case.

The pilot at some point made the decision to have the gear visually checked. ATC confirmed what the maintenance people didn’t believe… the gear was sideways. The early decision was made for a return landing to Long Beach, however the pilot eventually made the safe, smart decision to land at the longer LAX runway where there were more emergency personnel available if necessary.

You can catch the live ATC recording via Joe’s podcast.
