Firm Cuts Airplane Design Time and Costs With 3-D
The French aerospace company Dassault Aviation uses a radical 3-D imaging system to dramatically cut the time it takes to design aircraft, as well as the factories and machine tools used to make airplanes. Designers use game-like joysticks and special glasses to manipulate and view 3-D objects on a 10-foot-tall screen.
“Virtual” ground crews simulate aircraft servicing, so engineers can optimize the location and functionality of various parts for more efficient maintainance.
The software for the system, which was developed in the company’s U.S. office in Woodland Hills, Calif., has cut costs for new-airplane development by a third and dramatically cut the time-to-production.
