Aviation Software: Aviation Weather Sites

by Mr. Flight on December 29th, 2005

I’m going to slowly start putting together a series of articles about different Aviation Technology tools… specifically software or websites that offer tools for use in flight preparation. This will be the first post in the series and many of you probably know of this website.

The ADDS (Aviation Digital Data Service) provides text, digital, and graphical forecasts related to aviation. In addition to the typical prog charts, I really enjoy the graphical TAFs and graphical METAR reports. Being able to select a section of the U.S. and view all applicable reports in the area is great.

Other features I enjoy are the winds charts where you can view either the winds on the surface, or at one of many pre-set altitudes. However one item I most frequently use is the turbulence charts. If you often fly with passengers who are new to GA aircraft, this chart can help figuring out if it might not be a good day to take a rookie passenger.
