Super Bowl TFR - Gotta Love Canada
So the purpose of a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is to “restrict air travel due to a hazardous condition, a special event.” Since the Super Bowl is considered a “special event” the FAA has issued a TFR for the Super Bowl to be held at Ford Field in Detroit. Therefore the FAA has implemented a 30 mile radius TFR around the stadium…. almost.
For those who are not aces in geography, Detroit is along the Canadian border. In fact the stadium is within two miles of Canadian airspace. Notice the slice of the TFR pie missing from the graphic? Canada. Apparently they are not so concerned about an aircraft swooping down on the football fun. No TFR there!
I don’t get it. Somewhere someone decided the Super Bowl should be protected by a 30 mile radius TFR. But they couldn’t get a 30 mile radius around Detroit and are still holding the event. This appears to send a message that there isn’t a security problem to have airplanes flying within 30 miles of the event. I agree.
Update: It looks like US officials have made a request to Canada to close the airspace and AOPA reports they are expected to comply. AOPA also pointed out that the MLB All-Star game last year at the same stadium didn’t warrant a TFR.
Update 2: Canada has agreed to extend the TFR into their airspace as reported here. Oh well, I still love the Canadians.
