Meigs to Reopen

by Mr. Flight on February 23rd, 2006

But don’t get too excited… The City of Chicago has announced plans to open a heliport on the old location of Meigs field. The Heliport is expected to serve about 300 flights per month to emergency first responders. Private use of the heliport will also be allowed for companies who contract with the city to use the facility…. what irony considering the land is public property.

Further irony is the Illinois Department of Transportation said the helipad is necessary because they needed a location close to the city to land helicopters for security purposes.

Meanwhile Mayor Daley continues his crusade against general aviation:

“We are in the same place prior to 9/11 as we are today. Someone could fly a single-engine plane right across downtown. It’s ridiculous not to have flight restrictions in metropolitan areas”

sigh……
