VATSIM announced last week they have removed voice restrictions in VATSIM to make it the preferred method of communications with controllers. This allows all controllers ranked S1 and above to use voice whenever practical and no longer requiring “voice ratings”. The effective date of change will be March 13.

I just watched (in person) the GlobalFlyer leave the NASA Shuttle Landing Facility in Florida. Liftoff was at about 7:22 am. In chase was a Beechcraft Starship. It was incredible to actually be there and see it fly overhead! More photos to follow later today.

Update 3: Looks like things are green again for tomorrow.
Launch is planned between 0641 and 0706 Wednesday 8 February.
The fuel leak is fixed and we believe the worldwide wind pattern is acceptable. I hope to be flying in the morning.

In North Dakota a company is testing putting cellular towers (or at least the equipment minus the tower itself) on balloons and floating them over areas to provide cellular service. With the additional elevation, coverage is significantly improved.
