GlobalFlyer Going to Smithsonian

by Mr. Flight on March 19th, 2006

At a press conference after landing in Kansas, Steve Fossett announced that the GlobalFlyer has completed its three major missions and will be retired. The final resting point will be a display at the Smithsonian.

Steve Fossett was asked about flying around the world via the North and South Poles for that record. Steve commented the GlobalFlyer was not built for such a flight and the team’s calculations showed the GlobalFlyer would wind up about 300 miles short even in the best winds/weather scenario.

On landing in Kansas the GlobalFlyer spun around on landing. Some called it a “celebratory donut” however Steve Fossett said that one of the brakes on the GlobalFlyer didn’t properly engage… while the other one worked fine causing the spin.
