The “pilots” lost contact with a six million dollar Predator Drone UAV over Arizona yesterday. The Predator UAV was patrolling the US/Mexico border looking for smugglers and illegal immigrants. The FAA has granted an exception for the Mermaid Amphibian Aircraft due to the retractable gear. Since the Amphibian has retractable gear for its amphibious operations, it doesn’t otherwise qualify for SLSA. Diamond has completed their first test flight of the Diamond D-Jet and have continued with more tests following the successful first flight. The first flight was Tuesday and lasted just over one hour.
During that time the Diamond D-Jet climbed to 12,000 feet and performed several engine and systems operational tests.
