DART Crashes with Satellite

Nasa-DartA NASA DART spacecraft was trying to rendezvous with a satellite had some navigational trouble and instead crashed into the satellite according to a report issued yesterday. The DARt though it was backing away from the satellite when in fact it was still flying towards it.

“The inaccurate perception of its distance and speed … prevented DART from taking effective action to avoid a collision,” the summary said.

The DART is six feet long and 3 feet in diameter. The satellite it crashed with was the MUBLCOM satellite, originally launched in 1999.

DART is Launched from a Pegasus XL rocket which in turn was launched from under a L-1011 jet at 39,000 feet. The Pegasus rocket takes ten minutes to reach space.
