Carnegie Mellon Researches Aging Aircraft

by Mr. Flight on June 22nd, 2006

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon are developing new methods to monitor the structural integrity of aircraft, leading to methods of determining when an aircraft should be fixed or retired. The system uses three dimensional computer models to aid their research.

“We have been collaborating for more than two years with Carnegie Mellon’s Professor Rollett on the problem of predicting the fatigue-limited lifetime of structural components like those found in aircraft,” said John M. Papazian, a research scientist at Northrop Grumman Corp., one of the nation’s leading defense contractors.

Aging aircraft is a growing problem as the aircraft booms of decades ago has led to lots of aging aircraft still flying.
