FAA Goes GPS
The FAA has announced their desire to convert to managing the air traffic control system via GPS by the year 2014, phasing out the radar system which has been in use since the forties.
The new system called “Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast System” will give more detailed information to controllers and can also transmit information back to pilots. This system is currently being tested by UPS in Louisville, KY.
The new system is expected to cost $600 million initially.
“What [ADS-B] also demonstrates is that the FAA can replace an outdated technology costing billions with one costing millions, which certainly calls into question the claim that the agency needs more money to modernize the ATC system,” - Phil Boyer.

Hi Marshall,
no. There is no way you can be traced with a GPS receiver unless the GPS receiver is setup specifically to broadcast your signal somewhere. The vast majority of GPS receivers are not setup to rebroadcast your location. I also have a GPS site, GPS Reviews if you are interested in more GPS information.
