Volunteer for Simulated Mars Mission?

by Mr. Flight on August 21st, 2006

The Russian Space Agency is soliciting volunteers who would like to experience what it might be like to travel to Mars and back. Sound like fun? Well be prepared to give up 520 days of your life for the experience. To qualify you must be between 25 and 50 (I’m good there) and you get an extra boost in the selection process if you are a doctor, engineer, or “computational instrument specialist” (I’m not good there).

During your “trip” you will spend about 250 days traveling to Mars, and about 10 days for the return trip. The rest of the time will be spent being on Mars and there could be an option to extend your trip to 700 days.

While you are on Mars you can spend time emailing mission control and receiving video from mission control, but no tobacco or alcohol. You will also be subjected to stress tests as emergency scenarios are put against you.

I am a MIS-IT, and life TECH that can fix/learn/repair anything - I however am not allowed to even apply for this sim [I am 55]- I frankly totaly disagree with this you have to be [some age range] for this; or any op. It is unfair and unrealistic to exclude us. We have a lot to bring to any op, and when they start to see this more of the best candidates will be used - regardless of age.

come on it’s a SIMULATION for gosh sakes..:-)
