Atlantis Retreats from, Then Heads Back to Pad
After watching initial forecasts for Ernesto, NASA decided they better start the long process of taking Atlantis back down from the pad and put it into its hangar to wait out the storm. However NASA officials also knew that in the long amount of time it takes for the Crawler to transport the shuttle back to the hangar the forecast for Ernesto could change. Thus they came up with a plan to stop and send Atlantis back to the pad if the forecast improved… and it did.
Officials realized that Atlantis would be able to ride out the storm from the launch pad and so while enroute back to the hangar, the Crawler changed directions and brought Atlantis back the pad.
A new launch attempt could come as soon as next week.
